Venus (Plaster Cast Study)

In a deep register of grays, a broken plaster Venus seems to brace against the wind under the press of light and shadow, its rippling drapery rising like waves to distill a solemn, stirring silence.

Executed in pencil, the artist builds a weighty backdrop with dense, rhythmic hatching, from which the pale plaster volume is lifted. Strong chiaroscuro articulates the breaks of the arms, the torso, and the wind‑swept folds; hard and soft edges alternate, asserting mass while letting forms dissolve into shadow. The composition tilts slightly to the right: the base in perspective and the large dark field on the left pull the eye, giving the headless body a forward thrust. The overall mood is cool and restrained, yet power gathers in the cadence of the folds and along the sharp planes of light.
