Galloping Horses

Galloping Horses

Waves surge like a herd of steeds toward the foreground as fishermen strain together to haul a wooden boat, a sweep of birds wheeling above, and rough-and-supple ink twists sea and human breath into one forward-driving force.

From a low viewpoint, the vast foreground spreads out; layered wet washes and reserved whites weave the churning foam, its galloping textures pressing toward the viewer. At midground, drier strokes carve the weathered boat and sturdy figures, the coarse lines binding clothing folds to the grain of the planks. With a crossbeam on their shoulders and feet on wet sand, their reflections are softly blurred in thin ink, giving weight and the cadence of steps. Above, a flock sketched with brisk marks arcs across the sky, setting a countercurrent to the groundward push and opening tension between the steadiness of labor and the bracing wind.
