Peony (Line Drawing)

Peony (Line Drawing)

On a pale yellow ground, fine blue-ink lines trace a diagonally emerging peony branch; petals and leaves layer like waves, and within the calm the structure and spirit are revealed.

Rendered in baimiao, the drawing relies on single-hued, blue-ink lines whose turns and varied pressure model the sinew of petals and branch. A bough emerges diagonally from the lower edge, bearing two open blooms; nearby buds and tender leaves mark distinct stages of growth. Generous negative space frames a cluster gathered to one quarter of the sheet, giving the composition a calm yet undulating rhythm. The overall mood is refined and restrained, a quiet telling of spring’s abundance.
