Lady with a Fan (Line Drawing)
In taut baimiao lines, a fan-bearing lady leans by the balustrade before a round window with meander border, a potted pine at her side and ribbons streaming, the scene hushed and airy like a passing breeze.
Executed entirely in baimiao, the lines are crisp and rhythmic; folds and streaming sashes gain depth through shifts of weight, while the fine patterns along the hem and the lattice of the railing set a deliberate contrast. The composition leans to the right: the lady stands before the balustrade, a round window with a drape encloses interior and exterior space; to the left, a pedestal rock and banana leaves answer each other, and a small potted pine rests nearby. With fan held and head gently turned, her features are serene; broad reserves of paper and unhurried curves lend the scene stillness touched by a hint of moving air.
